Job Description:


Job Title: Climate Action, Biodiversity and Circular Economy Development Officer
Reporting To Development Manager (with oversight from the Board of Inishturk Community Club CLG)
Location: Inishturk Island (Hybrid working arrangement, subject to operational requirements)


Purpose of the Role:
● The Climate Action, Biodiversity and Circular Economy Development Officer will support delivery of the
● Inishturk 2030 Action Plan, with particular focus on:
● Circular economy transition
● Climate action and Net Zero planning
● Biodiversity protection and enhancement
● Health, wellbeing and community resilience
● Supporting strategic development initiatives
● The role will strengthen environmental resilience, enhance community wellbeing, and build
structured delivery capacity across priority island projects.


Key Responsibilities:
● The role will be structured across three core work streams:
● Circular Economy, Climate Action & Biodiversity
● Support establishment and coordination of the Net Zero Working Group.
● Contribute to development and implementation of a prioritised Net Zero Roadmap.
● Support participation in SEAI, national and EU climate initiatives.
● Assist with climate risk assessment and adaptation planning.
● Develop and support implementation of a circular waste and reuse strategy.
● Promote repair, reuse, refill and exchange initiatives.
● Support delivery of a Local Biodiversity Action Plan.
● Coordinate invasive species identification, removal and monitoring.
● Support habitat enhancement projects including native planting, pollinator initiatives,
food forest projects and drystone wall restoration.
● Build partnerships with biodiversity organisations and research institutions.
● Assist island farmers and landholders in accessing relevant agri-environmental
Schemes.


Person Specification:
Essential Criteria:
● Relevant third-level qualification (Level 8 or higher) in Environmental Science,
● Sustainability, Community Development, Ecology, Conservation, or related discipline.
● Demonstrated experience in project delivery.
● Experience working with community groups or multi-stakeholder environments.
● Strong organisational and communication skills.
● Ability to work independently and manage workload effectively.
● Experience in funding applications or grant-supported projects.


Desirable Criteria:
● Level 9 in Environmental Science
● Familiar with Arc GIS

● Experience in invasive species control, eradication and biosecurity.
● Experience in biodiversity, climate action or circular economy initiatives.
● Knowledge of rural or island communities.
● Experience in facilitation or public engagement.
● Understanding of governance structures within community organisations.


Terms & Conditions of Employment:
● Salary: €35,000 per annum (pro rata).
● Contract: 18-month fixed-term contract, subject to probation and satisfactory
performance. Extension may be considered subject to funding availability and
organisational need.


● Hours: 15 hours per week (hybrid/remote basis, subject to operational
requirements). Some evening and weekend work may be required.
● Pension: Access to a pension scheme (Community Development Programme model
– employer contribution match up to 10%, subject to eligibility and scheme rules).
● Travel: Subsidised ferry fare or assistance securing the islander rate (€10), subject
to organisational policy.
● Accommodation: Island accommodation facilitated, subject to availability and
separate agreement.
● Work Equipment: Work mobile phone provided.
● Probation: Standard probationary period to apply (to be confirmed in contract).


Performance & Review
Performance will be reviewed against
● Delivery of agreed annual work plans.
● Funding secured and projects implemented.
● Community engagement outcomes.
● Contribution to Action Plan objectives.
● Compliance with governance and reporting requirements.

Inishturk is a small beautiful island, 5km x 2.5km, located 9 miles (14.5km) off the west coast of Mayo. It rises boldly from the wild North Atlantic in wall-like cliffs to the northwest and steep hills to the north on which stands the ruins of the old signal tower 688 ft above sea level.
